Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma Highlights State’s Struggles and Economic Growth Prospects

Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma recently addressed the historical struggles of Assam, while expressing optimism about the state’s future economic growth.

In a tweet, Sarma outlined the state’s complex past, emphasizing the significant challenges Assam has faced. He noted that Assam has been divided five times since the country’s independence and suffered the loss of its capital without any compensation. “We were asked to leave our capital, and nobody gave us a single rupee to reconstruct it,” Sarma stated.

Sarma further elaborated on the state’s historical difficulties, stating, “We are a landlocked state. We face militancy, hesitation, and challenges that other regions don’t understand. Bengal has never been partitioned after the country’s partition, but Assam bore the brunt of it.”

Despite these setbacks, Sarma highlighted Assam’s evolving economic potential, pointing out that since 2014, the Government of India has placed special focus on bringing Assam to the mainstream. “Assam has attracted more investment than West Bengal, and I am confident we will surpass Bengal’s figures in the coming years,” he shared, promising to disclose the exact investment data in a press conference soon.

Sarma refrained from directly comparing Assam to Bengal but recognized Bengal’s importance, adding, “Bengal is a great state with a big population. Assam is smaller, and so I won’t want to compare.”

Sarma’s statement reinforces his commitment to transforming Assam into a key economic hub, despite its difficult historical legacy.
