Guwahati, 7th July: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma conducted an assessment of relief operations on Sunday, visiting multiple relief camps in Kamrup district and assuring displaced residents of new housing under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY).
As Assam grapples with severe flooding, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma visited several relief camps in Kamrup district to inspect facilities and interact with displaced residents. “The safety and hygiene of flood relief camps is our priority. My team is reaching out to all people staying here to gather real-time feedback,” Sarma posted on X.
Accompanied by local officials, Sarma’s first stop was the relief camp at Amrit Chandra Thakuria Commerce College in Palashbari, where 28 flood-affected individuals are sheltered. He assured families there of new housing under PMAY to replace their damaged homes.
In Nahira, at the LP School, Sarma met more displaced residents, focusing on provisions for children and the elderly. His visit to Nahira Guimara Regional High School saw him engaging with 236 individuals temporarily housed there, reiterating the need for adequate care and provisioning.
“The state government is fully committed to managing the flood situation effectively,” Sarma stated, acknowledging the crisis’s severity, which has affected 23,96,648 people across 107 revenue circles and 3,535 villages in 29 districts. Major rivers, including the Brahmaputra and its tributaries like the Burhidihing and Dikhou, continue to flow above danger levels, worsening the flooding.
Meanwhile, the Regional Meteorological Centre at Borjhar has issued a ‘watch’ notification for heavy rainfall in isolated areas of Dhubri, Kokrajhar, Chirang, Baksa, Cachar, and Karimganj districts, signaling further challenges ahead.
