Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma Launches Nationwide Tree Plantation Campaign ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’
Northeast Desk, 1st August: In a landmark move to boost environmental conservation, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma inaugurated the nationwide tree plantation campaign, ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam,’ in Assam on Thursday. The initiative is part of the broader Amrit Brikshya Andolan 2024, aiming to significantly enhance the state’s green cover. The launch event took place early in the morning at the Ministers’ Colony in Dispur, where CM Sarma planted the campaign’s first tree.
The inauguration ceremony was graced by the presence of Minister for Environment and Forests Chandra Mohan Patowary, along with several high-ranking officials, emphasizing the campaign’s importance and ambitious goals. The initiative aims to plant a staggering three crore trees across Assam by August 15.
From today, citizens can collect saplings from designated local distribution centers, with the distribution period running until August 12, 2024. The campaign seeks to mobilize the entire state in a unified effort to enhance environmental sustainability and green cover.
“This initiative is not just about planting trees; it’s about fostering a deeper connection with nature and contributing to the well-being of our planet,” said CM Sarma. “We are committed to making Assam a greener, healthier place for future generations.”
Minister Patowary echoed these sentiments, highlighting the environmental, social, and economic benefits of the campaign. “By participating in ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam,’ every citizen can make a tangible difference in combating climate change and preserving biodiversity,” he added.
The ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’ campaign encourages widespread community involvement, urging schools, colleges, businesses, and individuals to partake in the tree-planting activities. The campaign will also involve monitoring and maintaining the planted trees to ensure their growth and survival.
As Assam embarks on this massive tree plantation drive, it sets a precedent for other states, demonstrating a strong commitment to environmental stewardship and sustainable development.
