Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma Raises Concerns Over High Voter Turnout in Minority-Dominated Dhubri Constituencies

Guwahati, 6th June: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has expressed concern over the high voter turnout in the minority-dominated Dhubri Lok Sabha constituencies, describing it as ‘alarming’ and suggesting possible communalism from the Muslim community. Sarma highlighted the demographic changes and their implications for indigenous communities in middle and lower Assam.

He cited Congress leader Rakibul Hussian’s win by a margin of 10 lakh votes as indicative of the potential threat to the existence of indigenous communities. Sarma emphasized that while Hindu voters are not communal, Muslim-dominated areas heavily favored Congress, raising questions about the future demographic balance.

The first five phases of the ongoing Lok Sabha elections saw Assam’s Dhubri constituency achieve the highest voter turnout at 92.08 percent, with Barpeta and Nagaon also ranking in the top 10 for voter participation. Dhubri and Barpeta voted on May 7 during the third phase, while Nagaon voted on April 26 in the second phase.
