Assam CM Hits Back at ‘Character Assassination’ Allegations

Guwahati: The political battleground in Assam heated up as the ruling BJP and opposition Congress locked horns over a fresh controversy, with both parties threatening legal action. The escalating war of words has put Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and Jorhat MP Gaurav Gogoi at the center of a high-stakes political showdown.

The controversy erupted when Congress leader Jairam Ramesh accused the Assam CM of leading a “character assassination” campaign against Gogoi. In a strongly worded social media post on Sunday, Ramesh announced that the party would take immediate legal action, calling the attacks politically motivated. He claimed that Gogoi was being targeted for exposing “blatant corruption and black deeds” within the BJP-led Assam government.

Sarma hit back with a sharp response, dismissing Congress’s allegations as political theatrics. “Who will be the former and present Chief Minister will be decided by the people of Assam—not by you,” he declared, challenging Congress’s narrative. Unfazed by Ramesh’s threat, Sarma further revealed that his government was also preparing for legal proceedings against Congress, turning the dispute into a full-fledged legal confrontation.

The roots of the dispute trace back to the June 2024 Lok Sabha elections, where Gogoi defied BJP’s aggressive campaign to retain the Jorhat seat, a result that reportedly unsettled the ruling party. Ramesh, in a direct attack on both Sarma and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, accused the BJP of relying on “defamation, distortion, and diversion” to weaken its opponents. He predicted that Sarma’s government would be voted out within a year, further intensifying the political drama.

With both BJP and Congress preparing for a courtroom battle, the controversy has added another layer of tension to Assam’s political landscape. As the state moves closer to the next electoral cycle, the unfolding legal and political battle is expected to shape the course of Assam’s leadership fight in the months ahead.
