Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma visited to West Boragaon in Guwahati in order to view the location for the construction of a Martyrs Memorial and Martyrs Park on Friday.
He was accompanied by cabinet minister Atul Bora and Rajya Sabha MP Pabitra Margherita, alongside senior government officials.
Atul Bora, the cabinet minister for agriculture, horticulture, and animal husbandry, announced on Twitter that the building project has been identified for a site in that section of the city that is about 100 bighas in size.
The step is being taken in order to preserve the memory of outstanding martyrs who gave their life in the Assam Movement.
He wrote, “The ‘Martyrs Memorial and Martyrs Park’ is being constructed on about 100 bighas of land in Paschim Boragaon, Guwahati to perpetuate the memory of the great martyrs who made history by sacrificing their lives during the Assam Movement.”
Bora added that the first phase’s work has been completed to a degree of roughly 50%. The minister said that the CM had overseen the project’s rapid progress.
While speaking at the event, CM Sarma addressed the contentious topic of the educational medium used in Assamese institutions.
He said, “Relatives of the very organisations that are protesting against the decision, study in English medium schools.”
CM Sarma said, “Student count has decreased in Assamese medium schools. The decline is worrying in institutes in Upper Assam.”
CM added, “In comparison, student count in educational institutions in Lower Assam in more. Assamese medium schools have been kept functional only by students from minority communities,”
