Assam CM Lays Foundation Stones for Development Projects to Preserve Vaishnavite Heritage in Barpeta

Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma visited Barpeta during the ongoing Doul Utsav, marking a significant step in preserving the region’s Vaishnavite cultural heritage.

During his visit, he laid the foundation stones for several infrastructure projects at religious sites tied to the legacy of Vaishnavite saints, Srimanta Sankardeva and Damodar Dev.

Sarma’s visit began at Patbaushi Srimanta Sankardeva Than, where he participated in religious rituals before initiating development work aimed at enhancing the infrastructure of the site. He also laid the foundation stones for projects at Shri Shri Dev Damodar Guru’s Adi Dham Patbaushi Sattra, another significant location associated with the Vaishnavite tradition.

The foundation stones were laid as part of a larger initiative to boost the infrastructure at these historically important religious sites, ensuring that they remain well-preserved for future generations. These sites have deep cultural and spiritual significance, as Srimanta Sankardeva and Damodar Dev are revered for their contributions to the Vaishnavite movement in Assam.

During his visit to Barpeta Sattra, another major Vaishnavite institution, the Chief Minister announced a Rs 10 crore project for the development of Patbaushi Sattra. This is aimed at improving the infrastructure of the sattra, which has historical connections to Srimanta Sankardeva’s spiritual and literary legacy. Sarma also laid the foundation stone for a Rs 7 crore development project at Chinpara Bhithita, where Srimanta Sankardeva is believed to have first arrived in Barpeta.

These initiatives reflect the Assam government’s commitment to preserving the heritage of Vaishnavite institutions, which continue to play a central role in the religious and cultural life of the region. The efforts seek to safeguard the legacy of Srimanta Sankardeva and Damodar Dev, whose contributions shaped the spiritual fabric of Assam.
