Assam CM Pays Tribute to Eminent Scholar Upendranath Sarma

Guwahati, September 14, 2024 – Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma expressed his deep condolences on the passing of Upendranath Sarma, a prominent figure in Assamese literature and education. Sarma, aged 96, passed away at his residence in Sarania, Guwahati.

Sarma, a retired English professor from Cotton College, was renowned for his contributions to education, having lectured at prestigious institutions such as Dibrugarh University and Gauhati University. His influence extended beyond classrooms, making a lasting impact on Assamese literary circles.

Taking to the microblogging site X, the Chief Minister’s Office shared CM Himanta Biswa Sarma’s heartfelt message: “HCM Dr Himanta Biswa expresses his heartfelt condolences on the passing of the esteemed educationist and insightful critic, Upendra Nath Sharma. His immense wisdom touched countless lives, and his enduring legacy as a literary scholar will continue to inspire future generations. HCM offers his prayers for the departed soul’s eternal peace.”

Sarma, a distinguished scholar, authored ten books and contributed significantly to Assamese literature through his translations and editorial works. His intellectual legacy continues to inspire the literary and educational landscape of Assam.
