Assam CM: Recent Skirmish Not Part Of Border Dispute With Meghalaya

Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday denied that the recent clash at the state’s border with Meghalaya was related to the ongoing border conflict between Assam and Meghalaya.

CM Sarma, who arrived in New Delhi to attend the program on the occasion of 400th birth anniversary of Lachit Borphukan, mentioned it to reporters on being questioned regarding the matter.

He said, “This is outside the scope of the Assam-Meghalaya boundary issue. This might be described as a fight between the residents of a Meghalayan village and the Assam Police.”

The Assam CM condemned the state police for their actions. CM Sarma said, “Assam Police should not have been so aggressive in dealing with the situation. The police fired shots more than were required.”

A judicial investigation into the incident has been requested in the interim. I would personally insist that the probe be taken up by the CBI or NIA, the speaker continued.

It should be noted that on Tuesday morning, shooting broke out at Mukhrow under Jirikinding PS in West Karbi Anglong District between Assam Forest Officials and unidentified miscreants. According to reports, the incident happened when the Forest Party tried to halt a truck carrying illicit timber.

When the forest party workers halted the truck, they were attacked by gheraoed miscreants who used violence. The woodland party turned to gunfire in an effort to save their lives. Three civilians and one forest guard perished in the incident.
