Assam CM responds to Government’s Mandate of Imposing Rs 300 Tax on Bihu Celebrations

Guwahati, 22nd November: Assam’s Chief Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma responded to the government’s recent directive imposing a Rs 300 tax for Bihu celebrations.

Sarma emphasized that while the state charges Rs 300 for processing permission, it is crucial to acknowledge that the government is allocating nearly 50 crore for organizing traditional cultural festivals.

In a statement on his official handle, Himanta Biswa Sarma stated, “If a Bihu committee receives 1.5 lacs from the government, it is unlikely that anyone would criticize us for collecting Rs 300 for the state exchequer.”

The State Government has introduced a new tax policy, surprising citizens. According to the notice, individuals now need to pay extra to celebrate Bihu, organize public rallies, or conduct public meetings. The new policy includes a Rs 300 fee for permission for cultural processions, events, Bihu, and ceremonies.

Additionally, it imposes a Rs 2,000 fee for permission for political rallies and events, Rs 2,000 for all types of sporting events, Rs 500 for street plays and awareness rallies, and Rs 5,000 for trade fairs and food fairs. There is also a Rs 50,000 charge in Guwahati for commercial construction permission and Rs 25,000 in other parts of the state. Opening petrol pumps and gas agencies requires a Rs 10,000 permission fee. Furthermore, there is a Rs 300 fee for private employment verification, rented accommodation and PG verification, and verification of workers involved in construction.

Earlier, most taxes were paid directly to the government, but the recent revision has increased the burden on citizens. Payments for these taxes are now processed through the Assam Police Sewa portal.

The unexpected tax policy has sparked criticism, with opposition parties condemning the Assam state government for placing an additional burden on its people.
