Assam CM Sarma and Bengal Congress Leader Choudhury Lock Horns Over Ideological Differences
Guwahati, 8th July: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma sparked controversy on social media platform X on July 8 with his statement affirming that “Hinduism is peaceful, soft and cannot cause harm to anyone. It’s a universal truth.” Sarma questioned the coexistence of contrasting ideologies, portraying one as monolithic, non-inclusive, and aggressive.
In response, Bengal Congress leader Kamru Choudhury countered Sarma’s assertions, highlighting India’s historical tradition of accommodating diverse ideologies despite challenges like colonial rule. Choudhury criticized what he described as a divisive agenda promoted by RSS ideologues, accusing them of attempting to redefine India’s peaceful fabric of coexistence.
The debate intensified as Sarma pushed back, lamenting the costs associated with ideological conflicts and referencing societal tensions and demographic changes. He underscored the resurgence of Hindu sentiments in recent times, particularly citing movements like the Ram Mandir movement, and emphasized historical losses and contemporary challenges.
The exchange between Sarma and Choudhury reflects deep-seated ideological divisions and differing perspectives on the socio-cultural landscape of India, highlighting ongoing debates about identity, pluralism, and historical narratives.
