Assam CM Sarma Announces Fulfillment of 1 Lakh Government Jobs Promise, Surpasses Target

Guwahati, 27th September: Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Thursday announced that the Assam government has fulfilled and surpassed its electoral promise of providing one lakh government jobs, with the recruitment of 1,24,645 employees across various departments. Speaking at a function where he distributed appointment letters to 300 newly recruited candidates, Sarma highlighted the state’s success in creating employment opportunities and emphasized the transparency and merit-based nature of the recruitment process.

“Not only has the state government fulfilled the promise, but we have surpassed it, recruiting an additional 24,645 candidates,” Sarma stated, reflecting on the progress made in tackling unemployment in Assam.

The Chief Minister specifically addressed the challenges once faced by engineering graduates in the state, noting that many were previously forced to seek employment outside Assam due to limited local opportunities. However, he said that over the past three years, a considerable number of engineers have been hired across key departments, including public works, public health engineering, and rural development.

Sarma attributed this surge in recruitment to increased capital expenditure by the state, which has enabled engineers to contribute to infrastructure projects, including the Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM). The initiative aims to provide safe, piped drinking water to every village and household, creating both jobs and critical public services.

The Chief Minister also pointed to the semiconductor plant project at Jagiroad as a future hub of opportunity for Assam’s youth, urging them to take advantage of the forthcoming prospects in the technology sector.

In a commitment to maintaining transparency, Sarma claimed that the recruitment process has been entirely merit-based, underscoring the government’s focus on fairness and accountability in job allocation. He urged the newly appointed officers to work with dedication and contribute to the state’s development.

Among the new appointees were 81 Assistant Engineers across civil, mechanical, electrical, and chemical disciplines in the Public Health Engineering Department, 100 Urban Technical Officers, and 101 Financial Management Officers in the Housing & Urban Affairs Department. Additionally, 12 Senior Scientist Officers and 6 Junior Officers were appointed to the Directorate of Forensic Science, reinforcing the state’s commitment to improving forensic capabilities.

Sarma also emphasized the government’s efforts in bolstering forensic science in Assam, citing the increase in forensic laboratories from one to six and announcing plans to establish a National University of Forensic Science. He noted that the enhanced forensic infrastructure has already led to an uptick in convictions and charge sheets in the state.

With these new appointments, Sarma’s government has now officially recruited 1,24,645 individuals, cementing its commitment to job creation and governance reform in Assam.
