Assam CM Sarma Calls for Urgent Judicial Reforms, Emphasizes Swift Justice in Sensitive Cases
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Sunday urged for a radical overhaul of the judicial system, particularly in cases involving women and children. Delivering a speech in Cachar, Sarma expressed deep concern over the increasing public frustration with the slow pace of justice.
“Society can only thrive in a just and equitable environment,” Sarma asserted. He underscored the need to expedite investigations and trials, suggesting a two-month timeline for investigations and a one-year limit for trials.
The Chief Minister highlighted a growing trend where victims, especially those of heinous crimes like rape, are bypassing the traditional judicial process and seeking immediate action from law enforcement agencies. This, he argued, is a direct consequence of prolonged legal proceedings.
Addressing the legal fraternity, Sarma appealed for their cooperation in expediting justice. He urged lawyers to avoid unnecessary delays and adjournments, especially in sensitive cases. “Whether a client is innocent or guilty, justice should be swift,” he emphasized.
While commending the district judiciary’s handling of POCSO cases, Sarma stressed that the speed of justice is paramount. “It’s not just about the verdict, but about sending a strong message to society,” he concluded.
