Assam CM Sarma Condemns Haldibari Incident Where Truck Hit Rhino

Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma took Twitter on Sunday to denounce the incident in Haldibari when a freight truck attacked a rhino on the road.

CM Sarma informed that the rhino survived the hit, while the vehicle was stopped and fined.

He wrote, “Rhinos are our special friends; we’ll not allow any infringement on their space. In this unfortunate incident at Haldibari, the Rhino survived; vehicle intercepted and fined.”

“Meanwhile in our resolve to save animals at Kaziranga, we’re working on a special 32-km elevated corridor,” he further wrote.

It should be noted that on September 22, CM Sarma and Sadhguru Vasudev officially opened the Kaziranga National Park to visitors for the current season.

On that day, the Assam chief minister erected three statues of rhinos at Mihimukh in Kaziranga in addition to Vasudev.

The ashes from burning rhino horns were used to make the statues. A stockpile of 2,479 rhino horns was previously set on fire by the Assam government on September 22, 2017, sending a clear message to poachers and illegal horn merchants that the horns have no therapeutic value.

As a result, the statues will represent an effort to immortalise the commitment and hard work of individuals who selflessly safeguard Assam’s pride, the one-horned rhino.
