Assam CM Thanks Manipuri Community for State’s Development
Guwahati, 25th February: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma expressed gratitude to the Manipuri community for their pivotal role in the state’s development. His remarks came following Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh’s commendation of Sarma for the inclusion of Manipuri as an associate official language in four Assam districts.
Sarma, affirming Assam’s commitment to strengthening regional bonds under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, emphasized the Manipuri community’s indispensable contribution to the state’s progress.
The Assam Cabinet recently greenlit the Assam Official Language (Amendment) Bill, 2024, recognizing Manipuri as an associate official language in Cachar, Karimganj, Hailakandi, and Hojai districts. The bill, amending the Assam Official Languages Act, 1960, seeks to uphold Manipuri linguistic identity in these regions.
In response, Chief Minister Singh expressed gratitude for Sarma’s recognition and underscored the significance of preserving Manipuri heritage in Assam. This decision reflects a collective effort to safeguard the cultural, social, and linguistic heritage of Manipuri residents in the state.
