Assam CM Urges Armed Groups to Engage in Dialogue for Lasting Peace

Guwahati, 21st September: On the occasion of the International Day of Peace, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma extended an appeal to armed groups in the state, urging them to abandon violence and terror-driven activities. Through a message on X, Sarma emphasized that only constructive dialogue can ensure Assam’s progress and prosperity.

“Today on #InternationalDayOfPeace đź•Š, I call upon the armed groups to come to the discussion table and together chart a new dawn for Assam. Violence and terror will never yield positive results for the State, while discussions will ensure Assam’s ascend as a premier State,” CM Sarma posted.

This call aligns with ongoing peace efforts aimed at resolving decades-long insurgencies in Assam. Sarma has consistently advocated for peace talks, particularly with ULFA(I), a major insurgent group. Despite a significant decline in ULFA(I)’s influence, Sarma acknowledged the group’s continued presence, with around 400 cadres reportedly stationed in Myanmar.

The Chief Minister also shared that while he occasionally speaks with ULFA(I) leader Paresh Barua, progress has been slow due to disagreements over Barua’s demand for sovereignty, which Sarma reiterated is “non-negotiable.” However, he remains hopeful that continued discussions will eventually lead to a breakthrough for lasting peace in Assam.
