Assam CM Visits Controversial Flyover Site, Suggests Political Motives Behind Environmental Protests

Guwahati— Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma made a late-night visit to the construction site of a new flyover project connecting Dighalipukhuri to Noonmati, aiming to assess the project’s progress amid ongoing protests.

The flyover, intended to alleviate traffic congestion in Guwahati, has become a flashpoint for environmental concerns raised by various citizens’ groups.

During the visit, Sarma addressed these concerns, noting a split in the motivations behind the protests. “There are two sections of people—those genuinely committed to protecting the environment, and others whose primary aim is to delay the project until after the elections,” he said.

Sarma suggested that some of the opposition might be politically motivated, aiming to prevent the BJP-led government from completing the flyover in time for elections.

Sarma further argued that such tactics could intensify the daily struggles of Guwahati residents, potentially creating frustrations that some hope will translate into a loss of support for the BJP. “Their goal is to make the people of Guwahati experience hardship and frustration, hoping it will deter them from supporting the BJP,” he asserted.

The Chief Minister reaffirmed the government’s commitment to balancing development with environmental care, pledging that the flyover project would move forward responsibly. The revised plan for the flyover has been adjusted to minimize tree-cutting, reflecting public sentiment for environmental preservation.
