Assam CM Visits Karimganj to Take Stock of Flood
Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Friday visited Karimganj to assess the flood situation and flood-affected people of Srirampur village.
“Impressed to see the resilience of people who are coping with their hardships. Asked the DC to take necessary steps for relief,” CM Sarma tweeted.
The chief minister also visited No 114 Ram Krishna Pathsala in the area and assured its management that the government will provide sufficient funding to reconstruct the school that had been harmed by flooding.
Assam is struggling with the floods with approximately 30 lakh people living in 2,608 villages scattered across 25 districts.
Meanwhile, a 30-meter-long stretch of road along the Assam’s Karimganj bypass was breached due to floods at around 6 am today. The road has been closed for vehicular movement.
The chief minister also made the decision to construct a guest house and a floating solar power plant in Karimganj which is home to one of Asia’s largest freshwater lakes and has a significant tourism potential.
According to a report sent by the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), the death toll from floods and landslides this year rose to 159 with eight more persons dying in six districts: Nagaon, Lakhimpur, Barpeta, Biswanath, Dhemaji, and Morigaon.
The assam Chief Minister announced on Thursday that a schedule had been established for determining the extent of the damage in each area by July 15 and getting it approved by the guardian ministers and secretaries by July 20. After that, compensation would be given to those who had been harmed. By August 15, the entire procedure is anticipated to be finished.
Numerous parts of Silchar are still under water, and the situation there is extremely dire as a result of the affected people’s lack of access to food, clean water, and medications.
