Assam CM Vows Crackdown on Land Encroachers in Dhubri
Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has issued a stern warning against illegal land encroachments, particularly in the border district of Dhubri, reaffirming his government’s commitment to protecting the land rights of genuine Indian citizens. The Chief Minister’s strong stance comes amidst escalating concerns over unauthorised settlements and land disputes in the state’s vulnerable border regions.
Speaking on the issue, Sarma revealed that he had directed the Dhubri Deputy Commissioner to investigate a recent complaint from a local resident regarding land encroachment. Taking to X, he stated, “Recently, a person came to me with this issue. I have asked DC Dhubri to have a look into this matter.” He further asserted, “In Dhubri, or elsewhere, we will not allow nefarious elements from encroaching upon the lands of genuine Indian citizens. This is the firm commitment of our Govt.” This declaration underscores the state government’s intensified efforts in recent months to identify and remove illegal encroachments, especially in districts like Dhubri that share an international border with Bangladesh.
Beyond land concerns, Chief Minister Sarma also addressed a recent communal flare-up in Dhubri involving the alleged dumping of cattle meat at a Hanuman temple. He confirmed the arrest of 38 individuals in connection with the incident, reiterating the government’s unwavering zero-tolerance policy towards communal provocation. “I visited Dhubri and directed law enforcement officers to follow ZERO tolerance against elements who desecrate our temples, Naamghars and sacred spaces,” Sarma posted. Demonstrating his personal commitment to maintaining communal harmony, he added, “If required on the coming Eid, I myself will guard Hanuman Baba’s temple all night long.”
During his visit to Dhubri, Chief Minister Sarma held a high-level meeting with Director General of Police Harmeet Singh, Additional Chief Secretary Ajay Tiwari, and other senior officials to comprehensively review both the land encroachment situation and the prevailing communal tensions in the district.
