Assam CM Vows to Eradicate Child Marriage, Slams Opposition

Guwahati, 26th February: During the final Budget session of the Legislative Assembly, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma delivered a stern rebuke to the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF), accusing them of endorsing the practice of child marriage and obstructing government initiatives aimed at curbing this social menace.

Expressing visible outrage, Sarma warned the opposition, including AIUDF and Congress, to cease the “business” of arranging marriages for young girls and boys under the guise of child marriage. He emphatically declared his unwavering commitment to eradicating child marriage in Assam, proclaiming, “As long as Himanta Biswa Sarma is alive, we will not allow child marriage in Assam.” He issued a political challenge, asserting his determination to put an end to the practice before 2026.

Addressing the plight of children, Sarma vehemently opposed the marriage of 5-6-year-old girls, emphasizing his resolute stance against child marriage in Assam. He further directed criticism at the Congress, questioning their advocacy for the marriage of such young children and admonishing their purported support for this abhorrent practice.

In a resolute stand against child marriage, Sarma’s impassioned remarks underscored his unwavering commitment to safeguarding the rights and well-being of children in Assam, signaling a firm resolve to combat this deeply entrenched societal issue.
