Assam CM Welcomes Congress MLAs’ Support, Foresees Positive Change

Guwahati, 14th February: In a significant political development in Assam, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma welcomed the decision of Congress MLAs Kamalakhya Dey Purkayastha and Basanta Das to extend their unconditional support to the BJP government.

Addressing a press conference, CM Sarma expressed gratitude for the MLAs’ decision, stating that their support will strengthen the BJP’s efforts to serve the people of the state. He hailed the move as a fortunate day, highlighting the MLAs’ endorsement of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s policies, which are poised to bolster the party’s endeavors in the region.

CM Sarma emphasized the potential of this newfound cooperation, particularly citing Basanta Das’s experience as a former minister and current legislator of Mangaldoi. He affirmed the government’s commitment to enhancing service delivery to the people with the support of the MLAs.

Furthermore, CM Sarma noted that Kamalakhya Dey’s resignation from his post will pave the way for even better service delivery with his backing. He extended heartfelt gratitude to both MLAs for their decision.

This development follows a trend observed in 2022 when Congress MLA Shashikant Das displayed signs of alignment with the BJP while remaining within the Congress party. Fellow MLA Basanta Das subsequently declared his intention to support the government, along with Kamalakhya Dey Purkayastha.

The Congress party had suspended MLA Sashikanta Das for showing respect to CM Himanta Biswa Sarma and state BJP president Bhabesh Kalita in a traditional Indian manner. Das, representing Raha constituency in central Assam, expressed his intent to support the BJP-led government from within the Congress to facilitate development in his constituency.
