Assam CM’s Office Stresses Vital Role of Gangetic Dolphins in Aquatic Ecosystems

Guwahati, 4th March: The Assam Chief Minister’s office recently emphasized the crucial role of Gangetic dolphins as “umbrella species” in aquatic habitats, likening their significance to that of tigers in terrestrial ecosystems.

A significant milestone in conservation efforts was highlighted, with the Greater Kaziranga region reporting over 92 individuals of Gangetic dolphins, solidifying its status as a vital source population for the entire Brahmaputra river system.

Recognized for its profound cultural and ecological importance in Assam, the Gangetic River Dolphin holds the distinction of being designated as both the national and state aquatic animal. Its conservation status is underlined by its listing as a Schedule-1 species under the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972, and classification as ‘endangered’ by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).
