Assam Coal Mine Rescue: Efforts Intensify with Deployment of 500 GPM Pump
Assam: A massive rescue operation is underway in Assam’s Umrangso area, where eight people have been trapped in a coal mine since January 6. Coal India has deployed a powerful 500 GPM (gallons per minute) pump to dewater the mine and facilitate the rescue process.
The pump, brought in from Nagpur, is being installed with the help of two generators, enabling it to pump out 500 gallons of water per minute.
The rescue operation is a collaborative effort between the Indian Army, Assam Rifles, NDRF, SDRF teams, and other agencies. Assam Mines and Minerals Minister Kaushik Rai confirmed that one body has been recovered so far, and the exact number of trapped workers is still uncertain.
The minister stated that the process of dewatering the mine has begun, and a team from the Navy will also join the rescue efforts.
Despite the challenges posed by the hazardous conditions underground, rescue teams are working tirelessly to locate the trapped workers. Inspector Roshan Kumar Singh, team commander of the NDRF, reported that the water level in the mine has not decreased despite the use of heavy pumps. The rescue operation has been intensified with the deployment of diving experts to provide specialized support.
