Assam Coal Mine Tragedy: Wife of Deceased Mine Worker Seeks Government Help

Assam: Sushila Rai Sonuaru, the wife of Ganga Bahadur Shreth, a 38-year-old mine worker who lost his life in the Umrangso coal mine mishap in Dima Hasao, has arrived at the site to receive her husband’s body.

Shreth, a resident of Nepal, was among nine persons trapped in the inundated rat-hole mine at 3 Kilo Umrangso area, and his body was recovered by the rescue teams of the Indian Army and NDRF on January 8.

Sushila Rai Sonuaru, a mother of three children, expressed her grief and concern for her family’s future, stating that her husband was the sole breadwinner. “We are poor people, and we don’t know what we will do and how we will live,” she said, appealing to the Indian government for assistance.

According to relatives, Ganga Bahadur Shreth had come to Dima Hasao two months ago, and another Nepali man, Lijan Magar, is also trapped inside the coal mine. Assam Mines and Minerals Minister Kaushik Rai confirmed that only one body has been recovered so far, and the rescue operation is ongoing.
