Assam: Commercial Vehicle Strike Reduced to 24 Hours

Guwahati, 5th January: The 48-hour strike called by commercial vehicle owners in Assam has been shortened to 24 hours following talks between leaders of the Assam Motor Worker Association and the state transport department. Commercial vehicles, including buses and trucks, are set to resume operations from 5 am tomorrow.

After a five-hour discussion, the decision to curtail the strike was made, considering the pending implementation of the proposed Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) law. The state transport department assured the motor workers’ association that necessary steps would be taken by the government regarding the law.

The strike, initially causing significant inconvenience to commuters, especially in Guwahati, prompted long queues at petrol pumps as people rushed to fill their tanks amid fears of a fuel supply crunch. The BNS law suggests stringent penalties for drivers causing serious road accidents due to negligence.
