Assam: Community Rallies Against Drug Abuse and Illegal Liquor in Ledo Tea Estate

Guwahati: A powerful demonstration of community unity unfolded today at Ledo Tea Estate in Margherita, as hundreds of residents, students, and members of various local organisations convened to voice their deep concern over the escalating issues of drug abuse and the proliferation of illegal liquor within their locality.

The impassioned gathering was jointly organised by the Assam Tea Tribes Students Association (ATTSA) Ledo sub-branch, the ACMS Ledo primary unit, the local Village Defence Party, the Ledo Tea Estate Women Committee, and numerous concerned residents, all driven by a shared desire to eradicate the growing menace of narcotic substances that has cast a shadow over their community in recent times.

Speakers at the event underscored the alarming trend of Ledo Tea Estate becoming a central hub for the production and distribution of illicit liquor and the trafficking of dangerous drugs. They articulated the devastating consequences of this unchecked surge, which extends beyond the direct health impacts on individuals to fostering an environment of increased immoral activities and the unsettling presence of unknown persons, thereby eroding the sense of security for families residing in the area.

Issuing a stern message to those engaged in the illegal drug trade, ATTSA leaders declared that continued involvement in such activities would inevitably lead to robust community-driven countermeasures. The organisers were keen to emphasise that the rally served as more than just a protest; it was a resolute declaration of the community’s unwavering stance of zero tolerance towards the presence and spread of drugs within the boundaries of the tea estate.

Echoing the sentiments of the organisers, residents voiced their strong commitment to maintaining heightened vigilance and fostering greater cooperation amongst themselves to restore the safety, peace, and dignity that their community rightfully deserves.
