Guwahati– Assam Congress President Bhupen Kumar Borah has highlighted the critical need for opposition unity to challenge the BJP’s stronghold in the state.
Speaking to reporters on Friday, Borah stated, “Without unity, it is not easy for anyone to defeat the BJP in Assam,” stressing collaboration as the cornerstone for success in upcoming elections.
Addressing the collapse of the United Opposition Forum ahead of the recent by-elections, Borah described the situation as a temporary setback and expressed confidence that opposition forces would regroup. He stated, “I am confident we will reunite and give a strong fight against the BJP,” indicating plans to align strategies before the 2026 assembly elections.
Reflecting on the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, Borah pointed out that despite BJP’s dominance in securing 13 out of 14 seats in Assam, Congress managed to secure 76 lakh votes, slightly ahead of the BJP in vote share. He emphasized the importance of learning from past campaigns and crafting a new strategy to consolidate anti-BJP efforts. Discussions on a roadmap for the future are expected to take place by December.
On the ongoing Assam by-elections, Borah expressed optimism about Congress’s chances, predicting wins in four out of five contested assembly seats. He highlighted improved performances in key constituencies like Behali, Bongaigaon, and Dholai, while also noting Congress’s return to Sidli after two decades following the end of a previous alliance with a regional party. “We have improved in Sidli as well,” Borah remarked, signaling a resurgence for the party in the region.
Borah’s statements underscore the Congress’s focus on unity and strategy as it seeks to mount a significant challenge to the BJP in Assam. With plans to consolidate opposition forces, the party is setting its sights on a strong performance in the critical 2026 assembly elections.
