Assam Congress Chief Warns Against CAA Implementation, Invokes Lachit Borphukan’s Legacy

Guwahati, 7th March: Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) president Bhupen Borah, on March 7, commemorated the bravery and ideology of the great Ahom general Lachit Borphukan while cautioning Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma about the potential dangers of implementing the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA). Borah emphasized that the CAA could have perilous repercussions on the people, language, identity, and economy of the state.

In a pointed reference to Sarma, Borah invoked Borphukan’s famous statement, ‘Dekhot ke mumai dangor nohoi’ (My uncle is not greater than my country), to convey that “Narendra Modi is not greater than the country.” Despite ideological disparities, Borah expressed a willingness to meet Prime Minister Modi, representing the indigenous groups of the state. He criticized CM Sarma for allegedly acting against the values espoused by Borphukan, who fought against foreigners.

Borah cautioned that the implementation of the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) could pose a significant threat to the language, identity, and indigenous people of Assam. In the interest of the state’s people, the Congress party decided to postpone the protest date from March 9 to March 8. Furthermore, they are prepared to cancel the March 8 plan if PM Modi agrees to meet with them, indicating a willingness to engage in dialogue to address their concerns.
