Assam Congress Condemns BJP’s Allegations Against Gaurav Gogoi and Wife as Politically Motivated
Guwahati– The Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) has strongly condemned the recent allegations made by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and the BJP against Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi and his wife, Elizabeth Colburn. APCC President Bhupen Kumar Borah labeled the accusations as “politically motivated” and an attempt by the ruling party to divert attention from its governance failures.
In a press statement, Borah accused the BJP of using these tactics to shift the focus away from critical issues such as corruption, unemployment, and the deteriorating law and order situation in Assam. He also alleged that the BJP has a long history of character assassination to silence opposition leaders, aiming to discredit them before elections.
“These allegations are baseless and laughable,” said Gaurav Gogoi, who has vehemently denied the claims. The Congress MP further announced that he would take legal action against the defamatory accusations leveled against him and his wife. The Congress leadership has also challenged the BJP to provide concrete evidence rather than continuing to spread what it described as “fake narratives.”
The APCC also came out in defense of Elizabeth Colburn, highlighting her credentials as an internationally recognized climate development professional. The party dismissed allegations linking her to Pakistan’s ISI as “conspiracy theories” with no basis in fact.
As state elections approach, Borah pointed out that the BJP was resorting to such smear tactics to weaken the opposition. He accused the ruling party of deflecting from more pressing issues like inflation, ethnic tensions, and unemployment by fabricating controversies designed to malign opposition figures.
“We stand firmly behind Gaurav Gogoi and Elizabeth Colburn. The BJP should focus on real issues affecting the people of Assam, not engage in political mudslinging,” said Borah. The APCC reaffirmed its support for Gogoi and urged Chief Minister Sarma to focus on governance and the welfare of the people of Assam, rather than engaging in baseless allegations and accusations.
