Assam: Congress Demands Unbiased Probe into PWD Engineer’s Suicide, Alleges Political Cover-Up
Bongaigaon: The Bongaigaon District Congress unit today staged a vociferous sit-in protest outside Rajiv Bhawan, pressing for a comprehensive and impartial investigation into the tragic suicide of Jyoshita Das, an Assistant Engineer with the Public Works Department (PWD). The protestors, led by local Congress MLA Pradip Sarkar, squarely alleged political interference and protection for key figures in the ongoing probe.
The demonstration honed in on Rudra Pathak, identified as the primary contractor for the under-construction stadium project with which Das was professionally linked. Despite the recent arrests of two PWD officials in connection with the case, Sarkar asserted that the investigation remains incomplete and skewed without the interrogation of Pathak. “Merely arresting two officials from the PWD is not enough,” declared Sarkar to the gathered media and protestors. “The fact that the main contractor, Rudra Pathak, has not even been interrogated raises serious concerns of political protection.”
Congress leaders further demanded that the investigation give due weight to the suicide note reportedly left by Ms. Das, which they claim sheds light on the immense pressure and circumstances that led to her untimely demise. Drawing a direct link, the party accused the ruling government of deliberately sidestepping action against Pathak, citing his purported affiliations with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). They contended that this alleged political bias is actively impeding the course of justice and fostering a climate of impunity.
Jyoshita Das’s death has ignited a wave of public anger and calls for greater transparency and accountability across Bongaigaon and neighbouring areas. As of now, the local administration has refrained from issuing an official statement in response to the fresh allegations or outlining the subsequent steps in the ongoing investigation.
