Assam Congress Gears Up for 2026, Vows Grassroots Campaign Against Sarma Government

The Assam Congress has solidified its battle plan for the 2026 state assembly elections, with party President Bhupen Kumar Borah announcing a firm resolve to challenge the governance of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. Borah revealed that the party’s leadership engaged in an extensive strategic session with the central high command, emerging with a unified commitment to confront what they deem as a corrupt administration.

Central to their strategy, Borah disclosed, is the dissemination of a comprehensive dossier detailing allegations of corruption against Chief Minister Sarma. This file, presented to the Congress high command, will be carried to every household in Assam’s villages, effectively taking the party’s accusations directly to the electorate.

This strategic direction was formulated during a significant meeting held at Indira Bhawan, where top Congress figures, including President Mallikarjun Kharge and Rahul Gandhi, convened with Assam’s state leaders. The gathering, aimed at preparing for the upcoming polls, saw the participation of key figures such as Gaurav Gogoi, the party’s Deputy Leader in the Lok Sabha.

Gaurav Gogoi echoed the party’s sentiment, asserting that the removal of the “corrupt government” is imperative for the preservation of democracy in Assam. He highlighted the instructions received from the central leadership to aggressively move forward, emphasizing the need to dismantle what he described as Chief Minister Sarma’s “Lanka of corruption” due to the prevailing “atmosphere of unrest” within the state.

Beyond state-specific issues, the Congress has also criticized Chief Minister Sarma, who also serves as the convenor of the North-East Democratic Alliance, for his perceived inaction regarding the ongoing situation in Manipur.
