Assam Congress Leader Slams Modi Government Over Kejriwal Arrest

Guwahati, 22nd March: Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) President Bhupen Borah sharply criticized the Modi government following the arrest of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, accusing the party of undermining democracy. Borah asserted that the current state of affairs in the country, under what he described as a “selfish” Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has led to a deterioration of democratic values.

Borah stated, “When a selfish person like Narendra Modi becomes the Prime Minister of the country, the democracy of the country is ruined.” He highlighted the decline in the condition of other political parties during the Lok Sabha elections, attributing it to the dominance of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

Regarding electoral finances, Borah disclosed details about the Congress party’s financial accounts during elections, revealing that they had 11 bank accounts in 4 different banks across the country. He mentioned that the Election Commission had set limits on campaign spending during elections.

Accusations of corruption and dictatorship against the Modi government prompted the formation of an opposition alliance known as the India Alliance, according to Borah. He claimed that this alliance, which has garnered significant public support, has drawn the ire of Prime Minister Modi. Borah further alleged that as a consequence, the Congress party’s bank accounts were sealed and frozen on the purported advice of the Prime Minister.

Addressing the issue of electoral funding, Borah expressed concerns about the disproportionate influence of money in politics, alleging that more than 50 per cent of the money received through electoral bonds is with the BJP. With only three weeks remaining until the announcement of elections, Borah voiced apprehension over the BJP’s spending capacity.
