Assam Congress Leaders Appeal to Governor to Halt Alleged Political Vendetta by State Government
Guwahati, 18th October: A Congress delegation led by Debabrata Saikia, Leader of the Opposition in the Assam Assembly, has urged Governor Gulab Chand Kataria to intervene and stop what they allege as political vendetta by the state government against opposition leaders. The delegation requested the Governor to ensure the freedom of speech for constructive criticism in social media.
The Congress leaders met with the Governor and submitted a memorandum claiming that the government led by Himanta Biswa Sarma is suppressing the democratic practice of constructive criticism by opposition parties. They expressed concerns that the government was targeting opposition leaders and attempting to stifle voices critical of the government by using administrative means on various pretexts.
In their memorandum, the Congress leaders emphasized the vital role of opposition parties in a democracy, stating that they serve to hold the government accountable and ensure democratic principles are upheld. They called on the Governor to uphold these democratic principles and provide an atmosphere where opposition parties can freely exercise their responsibilities.
The delegation included Lok Sabha MP Abdul Khaleque and MLAs Wazed Ali, Jakir Hussain Sikdar, Nurul Huda, Abdul Batin Khandakar, and Asif Md. Nazar, in addition to Debabrata Saikia.
