Assam Congress Leaders detained Amid Ongoing Protests Over Mridul Islam’s Death

Assam: Bhupen Borah, the president of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee, was detained by the Guwahati police on Friday, December 20, at Hatigaon point during their ongoing protest demanding justice for the death of Congress worker Mridul Islam.

Along with Borah, senior Congress leaders including Ripun Bora, Uday Bhanu Chib, and spokesperson Ratul Kalita were also detained. They are currently being held at the 10th APBn in Kahilipara, Guwahati.

Mridul Islam was killed during the December 18 Raj Bhavan protest, which led to widespread unrest. Following the incident, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced a police probe into the matter.

Earlier in the day, heavy police presence was noted around the Assam Secretariat and the Congress office in Guwahati’s Rajdhani Masjid area, where a large number of Congress workers gathered to continue their protest. Tensions escalated as protesters defied police barricades and attempted to march forward, resulting in a scuffle.

Meanwhile, the Guwahati police have registered a suo-moto case in connection with the disturbances caused by the December 18 Raj Bhavan Cholo protest, which raised concerns over issues such as smart meters, the Adani controversy, and the ongoing situation in Manipur.

This is a developing story. Further updates are expected.
