Assam Congress MP Abdul Khaleque Meets Sonia Gandhi Amid Party Resignation
Guwahati, 20th March: Senior leader and Lok Sabha MP from Assam’s Barpeta, Abdul Khaleque, held a crucial meeting with former Congress President Sonia Gandhi in New Delhi on Wednesday. This encounter follows Khaleque’s recent resignation from the party, raising questions about his political future.
The meeting with Sonia Gandhi comes shortly after Abdul Khaleque’s discussion with All India Congress Committee (AICC) General Secretary-Organisation KC Venugopal in Delhi, where he aired his grievances after resigning from the party.
Addressing the media after the meeting, Khaleque revealed that he had a detailed discussion with Sonia Gandhi regarding his concerns. He refrained from confirming whether he would rejoin the Congress party, emphasizing that the central leadership had promised to address his issues.
Khaleque expressed confidence in Sonia Gandhi’s leadership and commended the efforts of Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge and Rahul Gandhi in challenging the current government. He stressed his desire for the BJP’s defeat in the upcoming elections.
When questioned about his electoral plans, Khaleque clarified that he would not contest the upcoming Lok Sabha elections independently, indicating a shift in his political trajectory.
Abdul Khaleque’s resignation from the Assam Congress had already unsettled the party’s footing in the state, with his dismissal of any potential return echoing a sense of finality.
