Assam: Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi Files Nomination Papers for Lok Sabha Polls in Jorhat

Guwahati, 26th March: Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi submitted his nomination papers for the Lok Sabha polls in Jorhat, Assam, accompanied by prominent party leaders including Assam Pradesh Congress Committee president Bhupen Borah, Congress leader Pawan Singh Ghatowar, Sivasagar MLA and Raijor Dal chief Akhil Gogoi, Congress leader Rakibul Hussain, and Debabrata Saikia.

Gaurav Gogoi, a two-time Lok Sabha MP from Kaliabor, faces the challenge of establishing his credentials in Jorhat and positioning himself as a prominent figure of the Congress in Delhi. With ancestral ties to Jorhat, the Lok Sabha seat previously held by his father twice in the 1970s, Gogoi aims to continue his family legacy in state politics.

However, Gogoi faces stiff competition from incumbent MP Topon Gogoi, a former general secretary of the influential All Assam Students’ Union (AASU). Despite recent leg injuries, Topon Gogoi is vigorously leading his campaign, showcasing resilience and determination in the electoral battle.

The Jorhat Lok Sabha seat, one of the 14 Lok Sabha constituencies in Assam, has witnessed 11 elections from 1971 to 2019. The Indian National Congress (INC) has secured victory in this seat eight times, with an independent candidate and the BJP each winning it once and twice respectively.

In the 2019 elections, Topon Gogoi of the BJP emerged victorious with 5,43,288 votes, while in 2014, Kamakhya Prasad Tasa, also from the BJP, secured the seat with 4,56,420 votes. Throughout its electoral history, the Jorhat seat has witnessed significant political dynamics, making it a crucial battleground for political contenders.
