Assam Congress President Bhupen Borah Demands Justice for Deceased Worker Mridul Islam in Letter to CM

Assam: Bhupen Borah, President of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC), has written to Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, alleging police high-handedness in the death of Congress worker and advocate Mridul Islam during the ‘Raj Bhawan Chalo’ protest march on December 18.

In his letter dated December 21, Borah expressed deep concern over the incident, stating that Islam’s death was a direct result of excessive force used by Assam Police. “As you would be aware, a young and promising advocate, Sri Mridul Islam, lost his life to police high-handedness during a march by Congress workers to Raj Bhavan on the 18th of December 2024,” Borah wrote. He added that media outlets present at the scene corroborated these claims.

Borah highlighted the personal tragedy of the incident, noting that Islam left behind an unemployed widow, Hamida Parbin, and two young children. “Whatever our political differences, the death of a political worker in the service of democracy, at the hands of the state machinery, is a matter of great tragedy,” the letter stated.

The Congress leader urged the Chief Minister to provide a government job to Parbin in her home district of Kamrup (Rural) on compassionate grounds. He noted that Parbin, who has completed her Higher Secondary (Arts) education, requires immediate support to sustain her family.

Borah’s letter follows nationwide protests by Congress workers on December 20, demanding justice for Islam and addressing broader political grievances. The protests included marches to Raj Bhavans in Guwahati, Jammu, Chandigarh, and Patna, focusing on issues such as Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s remarks on BR Ambedkar, the Manipur crisis, alleged inaction on the Adani controversy, and the restoration of Jammu and Kashmir’s statehood.

The demonstrations resulted in the arrest of Borah and other senior Congress leaders, including Ripun Borah, Uday Bhanu Chib, and Ratul Kalita, by Guwahati Police. Notably, two Congress workers lost their lives during these nationwide protests, intensifying calls for accountability and justice.
