Assam Congress President Detained by Police
Guwahati: The situation near Rajiv Bhavan in Guwahati of Assam became violent with the police detaining many opposition figures on Monday.
Leader of opposition Debabrata Saikia and president of Assam Congress unit, Bhupen Kumar Borah, Abdul Khalek, Rana Goswami and Zakir Hussain Shikdar were amongst those detained by the police.
According to reports, police had cordoned an area in preparation for today’s protests.
Police apprehended numerous top leaders and politicians after protestors broke over the barricade.
While adressing to media, Congress Legislature Party (CLP) leader Debabrata Saikia said, “The BJP party has crushed democracy with the power of the double engine and abandoned all moral and democratic beliefs. Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma gave the police the authority to thwart our democratic rights. Today we launched a protest against the summon notice by Enforcement Directorate to National Congress chairperson Sonia Gandhi and leader Rahul Gandhi in the National Herald case.”
Saikia also alleged that ED has issued summon notice to both the leaders in a case which was already dismissed by the court in the year 2015.
Meanwhile, Rahul Gandhi appears before the Enforcement Directorate in the National Herald case on Monday.
Congress workers raised slogans ahead of Rahul Gandhi’s appearance before the Enforcement Directorate in the National Herald money laundering case in New Delhi.
Reportedly, some Congress workers were also detained near the party headquarters in the capital city Delhi.
It needs to be mentioned that Additional security forces have been deployed outside the ED office in Delhi ahead of Rahul Gandhi’s appearance.
