Assam Congress protests demanding flood relief funds

Guwahati: The Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) held a demonstration event in New Delhi to demand money from the government to help with flood assistance on Tuesday.

The demonstration was organised by Congress leaders, including state president Bhupen Borah, in front of the AICC headquarters in Delhi.

According to the protesters, the state government was unprepared for a flood management system. “The Deputy Commissioners were reprimanded by the Chief Minister on camera only for TRP. The list of cash provided for the areas impacted by the floods should be made public by the chief minister, according to Bhupen Borah.

Further, he said that because the contractors’ bills had not been paid, no embankments had been erected causing the general public to suffer from the floods.

According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority, up to 11 persons have perished in floods and landslides over the past 24 hours. With roughly 42 lakh people affected in over 30 districts, the flood situation in Assam has remained dire.

On Monday, the death toll from the current flood and landslides in Assam reached 70, with two policemen among the victims. In the Nagaon district, one of the police officials in charge went to assist marooned persons but was washed away.

The four western districts of Barpeta, Baksa, Goalpara, and Kamrup are home to over half of the 42 lakh Assam flood victims. In Barpeta, flooding affects about 21% of the total area.
