Assam Congress Rings Environmental Alarm, Slams BJP on Development Woes

Silchar, Assam: On World Environment Day, Assam Pradesh Congress President and Member of Parliament Gaurav Gogoi spearheaded a symbolic tree-planting initiative at the Silchar District Congress office today, advocating for urgent environmental conservation. He was joined by AICC General Secretary Prithviraj Sathe and MLA Jakir Hussain Sikdar, and the event also served as a platform to voice critical political and developmental concerns facing the Barak Valley.

Following the green drive, Gogoi launched a scathing attack on the ruling BJP government, directly accusing Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma of exploiting the Barak region for political mileage rather than genuine progress. “Himanta Biswa Sarma is using Barak merely as a syndicate to collect funds through a few ministers, without any genuine development for the region,” Gogoi asserted, highlighting what he termed a lack of authentic developmental impetus.

Gogoi further alleged that the developmental projects initiated during the previous Sarbananda Sonowal government have been deliberately halted under Sarma’s leadership. He claimed that the “political rivalry between Sarbananda and Himanta has resulted in the Barak Valley being deprived of its rightful progress,” suggesting that internal party dynamics within the BJP were adversely impacting the region’s growth.

In the wake of the recent catastrophic floods that have ravaged the Barak region, Gaurav Gogoi made a two-day visit to Silchar to personally assess the ground reality. After extensively touring flood-affected areas and relief camps in Cachar district yesterday, he returned today to visit multiple relief shelters within Silchar city. Demonstrating the Congress party’s commitment to flood victims, Gogoi personally distributed essential food supplies to those residing in these camps.

Upon concluding his engagements at the relief centres in Silchar, Gogoi departed for Guwahati to continue his scheduled commitments.
