Assam: Congress Strengthens Grassroots in Baokhungri Ahead of Crucial BTC Polls
Guwahati: In a bid to regain political ground in the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC), the Assam Congress has stepped up its organizational push in the Baokhungri constituency — a traditional stronghold of the Bodoland People’s Front (BPF). With elections drawing near, the political dynamics in the region are intensifying, as the Congress eyes a comeback amid competition from both the BPF and the ruling United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL).
Earlier today, the Congress party convened a strategic meeting at Owabari village within Baokhungri to bolster its local base. The session, held in the presence of Kokrajhar District Congress President Prem Hasda, marked the formation of two new organizational units under the party’s key frontal bodies — the Youth Congress and the National Students’ Union of India (NSUI). The newly constituted committees, each comprising 30 active members, are expected to play a vital role in galvanizing youth and student support.
Amir Basumatary, a former activist of the All Bodo Students’ Union (ABSU), was appointed president of the Youth Congress unit, while Binod Rabha, a former member of the All Rabha Student Union (ARSU), will head the NSUI division. Their inclusion signals a strategic move by the Congress to tap into local leadership with student activism backgrounds.
Emerging Congress leader and likely candidate from Baokhungri, Sunil Narzary, voiced strong optimism about the party’s chances, citing growing public support across the constituency. Speaking to reporters, Narzary launched a sharp critique of the current BPF MLA Daneswar Goyari, who has held the seat for two decades. He accused Goyari of failing to deliver meaningful development, and further asserted that the UPPL’s tenure has also done little to address local aspirations.
With political momentum building in Baokhungri, all eyes are now on how the Congress mobilizes its newly energized grassroots machinery in what promises to be a closely contested BTC election.
