Assam Congress suspends Sherman Ali Ahmed

Guwahati: The Assam Pradesh Congress Committee has suspended controversial legislator Sherman Ali Ahmed on Monday.

The order to suspend Ahmed was issued by APCC President Bhupen Kumar Borah for “continuously violating party disciplines”.

The decision came two days after his arrest by the Guwahati Police. He was accused of making communal and provocative remarks.

Sherman Ali was served with a show-cause notice earlier and was given a period of three days to submit a reply to the Assam Congress. But after not getting any reply to the notice served, the APCC president suspended him from the party.

The suspension notice served to the legislator, however, had no period of suspension mentioned. The notice only stated that Sherman Ali was suspended from the party immediately.

It may be mentioned that over the past few days, Sherman Ali had made several statements that were termed as controversial and provocative. Following his statements, several FIRs were filed against him, and based on these FIRs, a team of Guwahati Police arrested him on Saturday night, and on Sunday he was forwarded to police custody by a court in Guwahati.
