Assam Congress to Contest 2026 Assembly Poll with United Opposition Forum

Guwahati, July 18, 2024 Assam Congress President Bhupen Kumar Borah announced on Thursday that the party will contest the 2026 assembly elections as part of a 16-party united opposition forum. This coalition aims to strengthen its base across all districts in preparation for the state elections.

Borah emphasized that the alliance’s formation does not mean member parties will be idle. “It is certain that we will fight the 2026 state elections together with the united opposition forum. But that does not mean that the parties will sit idle. All parties will keep on working to expand their organisational base, and there is no harm in it,” Borah stated to reporters.

He clarified that being part of the forum does not imply an equal distribution of seats among the parties. Instead, seat allocation will depend on each party’s strength, background, and constituency history. The forum includes the Assam Jaitya Parishad, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), Trinamool Congress (TMC), and the CPI(M).

Borah also mentioned that the Congress party plans to contest all five assembly seats in the upcoming by-elections.

During a three-day meeting with AICC General Secretary Jitendra Singh, party leaders discussed strategies following the delimitation of assembly and panchayat seats. Topics included decentralizing power to district and mandal-level committees for local decision-making, activating the party’s disciplinary committee, and ensuring it operates according to the party constitution.

The meeting also led to the formation of six committees, headed by top state leaders, to focus on various aspects such as organizational changes, training new members, and election management. Additionally, Borah highlighted the establishment of a digital task force to ensure effective communication within the party.
