Assam: Congress Urges Disqualification of Suspended MLA Sherman Ali Ahmed for Alleged Anti-Party Campaigning

Guwahati, 2nd May: The Congress party has intensified its efforts to disqualify suspended MLA Sherman Ali Ahmed from the Assam Assembly, alleging his direct involvement in campaigning against party candidates during the Lok Sabha elections. Handing over a comprehensive 167-page complaint to Assembly authorities, Congress leaders reiterated their demand for immediate action against Ahmed, citing his purported violations of party rules.

This marks the second instance where the Congress has formally approached Speaker Biswajit Daimary, urging Ahmed’s disqualification. Deputy leader of the assembly and Dhubri Lok Sabha seat candidate, Rakibul Hussain, emphasized Ahmed’s alleged dissemination of anti-Congress content on social media platforms, stating it constitutes a blatant breach of party regulations.

Accompanied by AICC general secretary Pritviraj Sathe and other party leaders, Hussain submitted the complaint to Assembly Secretary Dulal Pegu, as Speaker Daimary was unavailable. Speaking on behalf of the party, Sathe underscored the urgency of the matter, referencing past instances where MLAs faced disqualification for disregarding party directives.

The 167-page dossier presented by the Congress includes extensive documentation and references, highlighting instances where MLAs were swiftly disqualified for defying party whips. Sathe emphasized the Speaker’s pivotal role in upholding party discipline and called for exemplary action against Ahmed.

This latest move follows the Congress’s initial petition to Speaker Daimary on April 26, 2022, seeking Ahmed’s disqualification over alleged anti-party activities. Ahmed’s suspension from the Congress in October 2021, for repeated breaches of party discipline, further exacerbated tensions within the party ranks. His arrest by the police in connection with provocative remarks made during an eviction drive in Darrang district in September of the same year underscored the contentious nature of his actions.
