Assam Congress Welcomes Prominent Leaders from Other Parties

Guwahati, 11th October: The Assam Congress unit today welcomed several prominent political figures from various parties, such as AGP and BPF, into its fold. A formal joining ceremony took place at Guwahati’s Rajiv Bhawan, graced by the presence of Jitendra Singh, the Congress party’s Assam in-charge.

The notable figures who officially joined the Congress include Prabin Boro, former general secretary of the Bodoland People’s Front (BPF); Pranay Rabha, former minister; Mahim Hazarika, former working president of the Gana Shakti party; Hilaluddin Barbhuyan, former vice-president of Asom Gana Parishad’s (AGP) Hailakandi district unit; Tilak Phukan, former state secretary of Gana Shakti party; Brajalal Rabi Das, former chairman of the district SC development board of AGP; and Awal Khan, former general secretary of the Agia mandal minority morcha of the BJP, among others.

All these new members formally joined the Congress in the presence of Assam Congress in-charge Jitendra Singh, Assam Pradesh Congress Committee president Bhupen Bora, Lok Sabha MP Gaurav Gogoi, and other Congress leaders.

This significant influx of new members into the Assam Congress occurs amidst ongoing controversies within the party, especially concerning some MLAs participating in government-sponsored functions of the BJP. While the actions of three MLAs have been at the center of this controversy, the Assam Congress leadership took action by suspending two party leaders for their involvement in the recent Amrit Kalash Yatra of the government.

This issue is expected to feature prominently in the APCC’s political affairs committee meeting taking place today, presided over by Jitendra Singh.
