Assam: Contractual Worker Electrocuted in Bongaigaon Due to Alleged Power Department Negligence

Guwahati: In a shocking incident, a contractual maintenance worker in Assam’s Bongaigaon district was critically injured after receiving a severe electric shock while working on a live electric pole. The alleged negligence of the Power Department has come under sharp scrutiny following the incident.

The unfortunate incident took place in Sajanabhita, where Jitendra Roy, a contractual worker, was undertaking routine maintenance. Roy had reportedly been instructed to work on the electric pole with the assurance that the power supply to the line had been safely cut off. However, in a deeply alarming oversight, the high-voltage line remained live. Roy, upon contact, suffered a powerful electric shock, which not only caused him to fall from the pole but also inflicted severe burn injuries to the lower part of his body.

Alerted by eyewitnesses, local residents swiftly intervened, rushing the grievously injured worker to Bongaigaon Civil Hospital. Roy is currently receiving intensive medical care and is reported to be in critical condition.

The incident has ignited a wave of outrage among the local populace and labor rights organisations. There are growing demands for an immediate and thorough investigation into the Power Department’s purported failure to adhere to fundamental safety protocols before deploying workers for high-risk assignments. As of yet, the Power Department has not issued any official statement regarding the incident, intensifying calls for accountability and appropriate compensation for Roy and his family.
