Assam: Contribution to Electronic Sector Can Make India Self Reliant

Guwahati: The government is eager to help Assam contribute to the electronic industry since it will boost jobs and economic growth and help India become self-sufficient.

The state has a number of advantages that might help it succeed in this industry. These include educational institutions like IIT-Guwahati, NIT-Silchar, State Engineering Colleges, Central Universities, private universities, and Polytechnics that are churning out a large number of skilled individuals in addition to a low cost of labour and a favourable business environment.

These educational institutions are essential in supporting start-ups and motivating them to materialise their ambitions. Some of them provide a range of programmes and courses that give students the abilities and information they need to turn their ideas into profitable ventures.

These institutes provide classes on a range of subjects, including marketing and business planning. Additionally, they offer chances for networking and guidance on how to be successful in the professional world.

Each and every aspect of the nation has been affected by the desire for independence. A growing amount of work has been put into developing a new India that makes use of its resources and is self-sufficient. The Indian government is working to increase domestic manufacturing and decrease imports. This has created numerous market prospects for creative start-ups, but completing the process is not straightforward and would take much longer than one may anticipate.

There is no doubting that one of India’s fastest-growing industries is electronics. India has a large amount to offer in terms of potential for growth in this market, with a population of more than 1.3 billion. However, if Assam is to make a significant contribution to the growth of India’s electronic economy, a few issues must be resolved. Infrastructure is one such issue. While there are a number of measures in place to solve this problem, much more needs to be done if Assam is to truly become a powerhouse in the field of electronics.

India’s existing electronic industry is unorganised and undeveloped. India has a number of competitors, but because these businesses are not integrated, they cannot take advantage of economies of scale. By inviting them to make investments in the state, Assam can take the initiative to integrate them.

Although Assam’s issue with dependable energy has recently made progress, it still needs to be strengthened. It will be challenging to establish firms in the electronics sector without proper, dependable electricity since machines and plants need access to dependable electricity. Assam has long lagged behind other states in the IT industry. The cause is the absence of an appropriate, focused government strategy in Assam to advance the IT sector there. We must also investigate this.

Flooding is another significant issue in Assam, which harms all of the state’s sectors, especially the electronics industry, by impairing connectivity and destroying resources. Therefore, flood management needs to be improved.

Assam has to recognise the potential of its local talent and create a targeted investment-attraction plan, particularly in electronics manufacturing, in order to further boost the state’s electronic economy. A deliberate effort is also required to increase foreign direct investment (FDI) in the sector. To advance the state’s electronics industry, the Assam state government has taken a number of actions. Though much more work has to be done.

The southern states of India seized the chance at the ideal time to establish themselves as the nation’s software hub, particularly Bangalore, which serves as both the IT capital of India and the headquarters of numerous prestigious Indian corporations, including Infosys, Wipro, and many more. The nation’s hardware manufacturing industry is still in its infancy. Assam should seize this chance because this industry has enormous growth potential. Oil, coal, bauxite, and other minerals are among the state’s significant natural resources. It also boasts a skilled labour force. Additionally, Assam benefits from being adjacent to important markets in Southeast Asia and other regions of the world. Assam has the potential to develop as a centre for the production of electronics and other high-tech goods.

The sector needs help from the government in order to attract new investors.

To increase the proportion of domestic production in the state’s electronics manufacturing and export sector, the Assam government must introduce an electronics development and manufacturing policy. This policy will create an environment that is favourable for business and will offer special tax breaks or incentive programmes to entice private investors.

Assam must adopt a comprehensive strategy by promoting the development of smart city projects and motivating talented individuals from other states to launch companies. Additionally, the government must support them by providing incentives and tax breaks.

The major issue for many businesses is that the product they are creating neither satisfies the market’s needs nor the technological specifications. Therefore, we require a solid policy framework that respects the needs and demands of the sector while also acknowledging the goal.

In order to adapt to changing educational needs, innovations, and research that further contribute to India becoming a knowledge giant, the Indian government has launched a New Education Policy. Assam must successfully implement this educational programme in order to encourage young minds to concentrate on innovation and realise their ambitions. By streamlining the investment plans and maintaining effective contact with the regional start-ups, it also needs to encourage private investors to make investments.

The government’s newly implemented Production Linked Incentive (PLI) Scheme is aimed at improving India’s industrial capabilities and exports. This will enable Assam to increase its manufacturing capacity. Everyone must contribute if the government is to achieve its goal of building an Atmanirbhar Assam that is balanced through technology, skill, and hard labour.

We can better support the electronic sector to help India become self-sufficient if Assam implements programmes like the Production Linked Incentive (PLI), Schemes for Promotion of Manufacturing of Components and Semiconductors (SPECs), and Electronic Manufacturing Cluster Scheme (EMC2.0).
