Assam: Controversy Erupts Over Appointment of Overaged BJP Mandal President in Dhubri
Assam: A significant controversy has unfolded in Dhubri district following the appointment of a new BJP Mandal President whose age surpasses the party’s prescribed limit, sparking debates about internal discipline and policy adherence.
The BJP’s National General Secretary (Organization), Bommarabettu Laxmijanardhana Santhosh, had explicitly mandated that all Mandal Presidents must be under 45 years of age. However, the recently appointed Dhubri Mandal President, whose date of birth is listed as August 2, 1978, in the party’s Sangathan-Parva-2024 records, is 46 years, 4 months, and 16 days old—exceeding the stipulated age limit.
State BJP leader Bhabesh Kalita had earlier clarified that while district presidents could be up to 60 years old, the age cap for Town Mandal Presidents was firmly set at 45 years. This apparent breach of organizational policy has drawn criticism from within and outside the party, with many questioning the leadership’s commitment to enforcing its own rules.
“This is a glaring oversight that undermines the party’s credibility. If the BJP struggles to adhere to its internal regulations, it raises serious doubts about its ability to ensure accountability in governance,” remarked a local political analyst.
The incident has triggered broader discussions about the BJP’s internal oversight mechanisms. Several party members have expressed concerns about the potential erosion of public trust due to such lapses. Critics argue that failing to follow established guidelines could lead to further controversies, affecting the party’s image at a critical time.
While the central leadership has yet to release an official statement, sources suggest the controversy may prompt a comprehensive review of the appointment process to ensure stricter compliance with party policies in the future. For now, the incident remains a focal point of political debate, with many awaiting a response from the BJP’s top brass.
