Assam Cop Sentenced To 4-Year Imprisonment For Bribery Case
Guwahati, 22nd November: A special court sentenced a Sub Inspector (UB) from Bokalia Police Station, Karbi Anglong, Assam, to 4 years of rigorous imprisonment in a bribery case.
The Sub Inspector (UB) of Bokalia Police Station, Karbi Anglong has been identified as Bhagyeswar Hazarika.
Hazarika was apprehended by the vigilance and anti-corruption bureau for soliciting and accepting bribes.
The court affirmed the validity of the charges, leading to the 4-year sentence under ACB PS Case No. 3/2018 u/s 7/13(1)(d)/13(2) of the PC Act 1988.
Furthermore, a fine of Rs 8,000 was imposed on Hazarika as per the Special Court’s ruling.
In a separate incident in October, Assistant Sub Inspector Ahmed Ali of Dhupdhara Police Station in Goalpara district, Assam, was nabbed by the Directorate of Vigilance & Anti-Corruption for alleged bribery.
Ali purportedly demanded Rs 5,000 to settle a family dispute, later reducing it to Rs 3,000. The complainant reported the incident, leading to a trap set by the Directorate. Ali was caught accepting Rs 2,500 as part of the bribe near Dhupdhara Police Station.
The bribe money was seized, and a case was registered against Ali under Section 7(a) of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988 (as amended in 2018) at the ACB Police Station on October 27, 2023.
