Assam: Corruption Allegations Surface Against Former Panchayat President in Margherita Over School Repair Funds
Guwahati, 24th September: A major corruption scandal has emerged in Margherita’s Jagun Village Panchayat, with accusations against former president Deepak Sharma for misappropriating Rs. 300,000 earmarked for repairs to Jagri Bangaon Primary School.
The funds, intended for critical repairs like wall paving, tin roofing, and electrical installations, were allegedly siphoned off by Sharma, who withdrew the amount using six cheques from UCO Bank. It is reported that Sharma convinced the school repair committee president to sign the cheques under false pretenses before any significant work commenced.
Despite some ground leveling and partial wall work, key repairs remain incomplete, prompting outrage from local residents and leaders. The incident has raised serious concerns about the state government’s commitment to its “zero tolerance” policy on corruption, with demands for swift action against Sharma and others involved.
